So, there's a story behind Aidan's birth. The Wednesday before he was born, my Dad told me he was going to be heading to Colorado for the weekend to help out my brother with his kids. Knowing that I was due any day, he and I knew that some major prayers were in order to not go into labor while he was gone! I know I would have been disappointed had he not been able to be around for his last grandson's arrival. So, I made a mental note and told Aidan to stay in there until Grandpa got back from Colorado. I also wanted him to not arrive until after I had taken Luke to his first day of Preschool, which was scheduled for the Tuesday of the upcoming week. Aidan had different plans. I had my OB appointment on Monday, Feb. 4th and the doctor said that I was 1cm dilated and to take it easy. I basically sat on my butt all day because I knew that something was in the works and if I pushed it even a little bit, I may go into labor. Cut to later on that night, I was lying in bed and started getting contractions. I started timing them as they weren't too bad, but having had fast labors in the past, I wanted to make sure that this time I was paying attention. About an hour and a half into the contractions I figured they weren't going away, so I called my Mom and asked if she could come up because I was in labor. I started crying because I knew Luke was looking forward to his first day of Preschool and I was excited to take him. But, I knew I could postpone it a day so I could be there. After all, I couldn't miss his first day of school, ever! While I waited for my Mom to come up, I had a bowl of cereal and watched some t.v. The contractions were obviously not that bad, and I thought I had a long time to go. I was wrong. Within about 30 min of my Mom arriving, my water broke and my contractions got more intense and more frequent. I called the on call doctor to tell him my water broke, but never got a return call. I ended up calling back to get a hold of him on my way to the hospital. The drive was fast and I had many strong contractions. It sure is hard to get comfortable when you are strapped in! By the time the doctor got on the phone, we were already at the ER and I was walking in the hospital. We were brought upstairs and the same nurse, Cherylnn was standing there. I mentioned she was the same nurse that delivered my son, Ryan and that I had a fast labor then. She looked at another nurse and they decided that they would tag-team and work together. We got wheeled into my room and in the time that I got on my gown and sat down, I was 5 cm. When they told me that, I said I wanted an Epidural (I planned on not having one), because I thought it would be a longer labor than with Ryan. I was wrong, within 20 min of her checking me (all they managed to do was get on a wristband and start an IV, along with my getting dressed), I was fully dilated. The anesthesiologist wasn't able to do his job. I guess I got what I wanted! It sure is true what they say, that urge to push comes and that's all you want to do. Two pushes and Aidan was here! Although the contractions were awful, I am happy that I got the unmedicated birth I had planned and wanted. After all, it was a bucket list item!
